More about MRI

MRI scans have been around for more than 40 years and are regarded as the gold standard for examining soft tissue, particularly muscle, ligaments, cartilage and tendons, as well as organs, blood flow and bones.

The exceptional clarity MRI is able to reveal means that it may detect problems that are not visible via other imaging techniques such as x-ray and may therefore lead to a quicker diagnosis for the cause of your pain and other symptoms.

They are now widely used in both private and NHS hospitals for investigating back pain, joint disorders, sports injuries, organs, blood flow and diagnosing and staging cancer.

Apart from the clarity of images and fine detail contrast MRI scans provide, another of their big advantages is that they use magnets and radio waves to create images, so are regarded as safer than CT scans and x-rays which use radiation.

Raymond Damadian first proposed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in 1969. In the UK, Sir Peter Mansfield, a professor at Nottingham University, was later awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine with Paul Lauterbur, an American chemist, for discoveries concerning MRI in 2003. So far in almost 50 years of use no safety concerns have emerged.

Medserena is the number one provider of upright MRI scans in Europe, with a network of centres in the UK and Germany, carrying out thousands of scans every year, in calm and spacious environments offering a 5-star experience, combining medical imaging expertise with exceptional levels of comfort and personal service.
