Self-referral open MRI scans
Medserena accepts self-referrals on a self-pay basis for open MRI scans, subject to meeting certain criterion. Please note, you must be at least 18 years of age and include all the following information on the booking form:
- Personal contact details
- Previous medical history
- A clinical referral letter
- The reason you require the open MRI scan
- Your registered GP contact details
- The body area you need scanned
- Specific safety questions to ensure you can have the open MRI scan

Need a Clinical Referral for your MRI Scan?
You can still book your MRI scan with Medserena.
If you do not have a clinical referral, you can book through Duality, an independent private GP service. To use the service, you must be a UK resident, aged 18 or over, and able to give the contact details of your own UK GP. Your GP's details are only used if Duality need to pass on an urgent finding.
The service costs £98, paid to Duality when you book, and covers two 15-minute GP appointments of £49 each: an initial consultation, and a follow-up appointment within two weeks to go through your results. The follow-up date depends on GP and scanner availability and may need to be adjusted. If you need to rearrange it, please give at least 48 hours' notice. Please note that the £49 for the initial consultation is not refundable, whatever the outcome, as the GP consultation will have taken place.
At the initial consultation, the GP will review your history and symptoms. If an MRI scan is appropriate, they will send a referral to you and to Medserena. Our radiographers check every referral, and we will then contact you to arrange your appointment, or you can book online quoting your Duality referral. The £49 for the initial consultation is deducted from the self-pay price of your scan when the scan goes ahead.
If the GP decides that an MRI scan is not appropriate or not safe for you, no referral will be made and they will suggest alternatives. In this case, only the £49 for the follow-up appointment can be refunded. The £49 for the initial consultation is not refundable, as you will have received a GP consultation. You can choose to have the follow-up fee refunded or keep the appointment and continue to use the GP service.
Your scan will be reported within 5 working days. The report is sent securely to you and to Duality, and your images are made available to you separately through our online image portal. At your follow-up appointment, the GP will help you understand the report and advise on any further treatment or referral. Your own GP will only be contacted if there is an urgent finding.
Important: Duality provides this service as an independent medical service, and referrals are issued only where clinically appropriate. Medserena does not offer contrast-enhanced scans, and not all scans are suitable for our scanner. If you do not meet the criteria above, you will need a referral from another medical professional.

Your report is sent securely to you and to Duality, normally within 5 working days. As a diagnostic centre, we are required to send results to a doctor, and in this case that is the Duality GP. Your images are made available to you separately through our online image portal, and the GP will go through the results with you at your follow-up appointment. If there is an urgent finding, it will also be shared with your own GP so that it can be followed up.
We cannot accept self-referrals for monitoring known malignant disease or for any scans requiring contrast agent enhancement.
Self-referrals are accepted solely on a self-pay basis. Payment will be taken during the booking process.
You can book a consultation with Duality, our independent GP referral service. If the GP decides that an MRI scan is clinically appropriate, the referral will be sent to you and directly to Medserena.
