Open MRI Scanner FAQs

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a safe, non-invasive way to capture images of the inside of your body using magnetic fields and radio waves. The Upright MRI allows patients to be scanned while sitting or standing, providing a more comfortable experience and additional diagnostic information, especially for spine and joint problems.

MRI scans do not use radiation and are considered very safe for most people. Certain implants or devices may prevent you from being scanned—please inform our staff of any implants before your visit.

The Fonar Upright MRI is open-sided and can perform scans in a variety of positions, including weight-bearing, which helps reveal conditions not seen in traditional ‘flat-bed’ MRIs. It’s also ideal for patients with claustrophobia.

Some metal implants, pacemakers, or other medical devices are not suitable for the MRI environment. Our team will review your medical history beforehand to ensure your safety. We do not administer contrast injections at Medserena, so if your examination requires contrast, we will be unable to book you.

You will be positioned in the MRI scanner (sitting, inclined, or standing), and asked to remain still while images are taken. There will be a piece of equipment called a coil close to the area being scanned. The radiographer will be in constant communication, and you’ll be closely supervised throughout the process.

MRI scans are painless. You’ll hear some loud noises, but you’ll be given ear protection. Most patients feel relaxed throughout their scan.

Yes, the Upright MRI is designed with an open front, making it much more comfortable for those who experience anxiety or claustrophobia in traditional tunnel MRI machines.

Most scans take between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on the area being examined and the views required. Please view our MRI scans for guidance on examination times.

The internal gap (patient space) of the Fonar Upright MRI is approximately 46 cm (18 inches) from pole to pole, providing an open area in front and above the patient. This design allows most patients to sit or stand facing outward, with a significantly less confined feel compared to traditional tunnel MRIs. The table/seat weight limit is 226 kilograms (35 stone and 10 pounds) – however depending on the distribution of weight, body shape and area being scanned, the actual scan may not be possible at the upper end of this limit.
