Suitability for an Upright MRI Scan

Choosing the right MRI scan is important for your comfort and for getting the most helpful results. Our Upright MRI offers unique advantages, especially for patients who need extra flexibility or have special requirements.

Please note: that Upright MRI is not suitable for every type of examination.

Who Should Consider an Upright MRI Scan?

You may be an ideal candidate for an Upright MRI scan if:

  • You experience claustrophobia or anxiety in closed spaces. The open design gives you a clear, comfortable view and extra space around you.
  • You cannot lie flat because of pain, stiffness, or a medical condition. Upright MRI lets you sit or stand inclined (depending on examination) instead.
  • You need weight-bearing or positional images. If your symptoms appear or worsen when you are standing, sitting, bending, or twisting, an Upright MRI can capture images in these exact positions (including our special "variPOSE" scanning protocols).
  • You find conventional MRI scanners uncomfortable or too small. Our open scanners can accommodate larger patients or those who can’t get into traditional machines – please see scanner dimensions here.
  • Previous MRI scans were incomplete or uncomfortable. If a standard MRI didn’t work for you, our upright scanner may be the answer.

Typical Conditions Suited to an Upright MRI Scan

  • Spinal pain or tingling that is worse when upright.
  • Suspected slipped discs, spondylolisthesis, or failed back surgery syndrome.
  • Conditions like Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome or whiplash.

If you’re unsure whether Upright MRI is right for you, contact us or discuss with your healthcare provider. We’re here to ensure your scan is as comfortable—and as helpful for your diagnosis—as possible.
